Our third P1 topic is called ‘Cold Places.’

We will be learning about our local environment in winter and noticing the seasonal changes all around us. Then we will explore even colder places across the globe and learn about the animals that live there. The role-play corner has been transformed into a winter wonderland, the water tray has been taken over by icebergs and penguins, and the sand tray is now a snowy glacier waiting for the children to build igloos.

Here are some activities that you may wish to try at home to support your child’s learning at school.

  • Discuss how the weather changes as the season turns to winter.
  • Name and describe winter clothing. Do you notice patterns?
  • Look at the calendar and name the three winter months.
  • Talk about special family events in winter time.
  • If it snows, build a snowman or an igloo.
  • Use water to write letters and numbers in the snow.
  • Search for icy puddles and notice what happens when the sun comes out.
  • Make and enjoy a hot chocolate – Measure the powder and milk.
  • Go to the library and look for books about winter, arctic animals, north and south pole, winter sports, etc.

Don’t forget to have lots of fun!
