Term 1b - 'Houses and Homes'

Dear Parent(s),

For our World Around Us topic this term we will be focusing on ‘Houses and Homes.’

We will be looking at many different areas within this topic including;

• Types of houses e.g. detached, semi-detached, bungalow, flats etc.
• Houses around the world and how the climate affects the house type.
• Materials needed for building a house.
• Literacy and Music linking to The Three Little Pigs story.
• Numeracy links odd and even patterns – house numbers.
• STEM challenge testing the strength of the of materials.
• The process of building a house.
• The artist Fredrick Huntertwasser.

Here are some activities you may like to try to do at home to support your child’s learning at school.

• Go for a walk and identify the houses around where you live.
• Can you spot any sequences on the door numbers?
• Can you find any odd or even numbers?
• Challenge how many tens and units are within your house number?
• At the end of the road can you guess what house number comes next?
• Draw a picture of the different types houses you have learned about in school and label them.
• Have fun creating a 3D model of a house from The Three Little Pigs story.
